Denotation and Connotation

again in here. I will share a little knowledge about one of the Linguistic
branches, Semantics. Here it is!
a. The definition of Semantics
Here’s the definition of semantics based on the experts.

J.R. Hurford and Branden Heasley (1983)
Semantics is the study of meaning in language.

William Frawley (1992)
Semantics is the study of linguistic meaning.

F.R. Palmer (1981)
Semantics is the technical term used to refer to the
study of meaning and since meaning is a part of linguistic.

Semantic is language study which the object research is the language
meaning.

Semantic is coming
from Greek language it
contains meaning ‘to
signify’ or to make
a meaning. So
that, the technical
term of semantic contains the definition of study
about meaning.

Denotation and Connotation
Denotation is the origin
meaning, real meaning that the word has.
Example
·
Blue :
A color intermediate between green and violet, as of the sky or sea on a sunny
day.
·
Snake : A
long limbless reptile that has no eyelids. Some snakes have a venomous bite.
·
Baby :
A very young child, especially one that has not yet begun to walk or talk.
Connotation is the meaning depends on the
speaker/writer’s intention. It involves his or her personal feeling.
Example
·
Blue :
Melancholy, sad, or depressed.
·
Snake :
Evil, danger. A deceitful or dishonest person.
·
Baby :
A person with whom one is having a romantic relationship.
